By definition, sonship is how a son relate to a father. So when we talk about sonship in Christ we are talking about how one relates as a son to God the Father.

The Bible in the book of John 1:11–13 states that:

He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Jesus Christ came to His own, and He was not received by His own. However, those that received Him were given the power to become the sons of God. Son meaning both male and female.

However, the word power in the opening text is the word ‘exousia’ in the Greek rendering. Exousia means ‘authority’ or ‘the legal jurisdication’. Hence those that received Him were given the authority, the legal jurisdiction to become the sons of God.

And not only those that received him but even i.e. including those that believe on His name. Those that believe on His name are also given the same power to become the sons of God.

The inception of sonship in Christ is at the reception of Christ. At that very point when you receive Christ Jesus, you are given the power to become the son of God and you qualify for an inheritance in Christ.
